Every POC-vs-GMRS thread ends the same way: someone says "it depends," and nobody explains on what. Here's the actual decision tree.
Start with one question: does your group ever lose cell signal together?
If the answer is no — you're coordinating a delivery route, a security patrol in a covered metro area, a family that's always within city limits — POC wins outright. Nationwide range without a repeater network beats GMRS's 5-25 mile ceiling every time, and there's no $35 FCC registration to file first.
If the answer is yes — off-grid property, backcountry trips, disaster prep, rural areas with real dead zones — GMRS wins. A PoC radio with zero bars is a brick. GMRS keeps working exactly when you need it most: when the infrastructure around you has failed.
The cost comparison nobody runs correctly
People compare sticker price and stop there. Run the actual first-year number instead:
- GMRS: radio cost + one $35 FCC registration (covers your whole immediate family, valid 10 years). No recurring fee unless you add a repeater.
- POC: radio cost + $0-15/month depending on the model's data plan and whether you're on a Zello Work or Odmaster subscription tier.
Over three years, GMRS is usually cheaper per radio. POC's real cost advantage shows up in a different place: onboarding new people. Adding a fifth person to your GMRS setup costs nothing extra — they just need a radio on the same frequency. Adding a fifth person to a POC group might mean a new subscription seat depending on the platform.
The feature GMRS can't touch
Most POC radios ship with GPS location sharing and web-based dispatch tracking built in. If you're coordinating people across distance and need to know where everyone actually is — not just be able to talk to them — that's a POC-only feature unless you're adding APRS to a ham setup, which is a different level of complexity entirely.
The honest answer for most people
If you only get one radio system: match it to where you actually spend time. Urban and suburban daily use → POC. Rural property, backcountry, or grid-down prepping → GMRS. If you can afford both, that's not overkill — it's the actual right answer, because they solve different failure modes.
